WHO AM I : Clare Brown

I'm a PhdD student at the Univerity of Glasgow. I'm reseaching the use of visual images and imagery in 19th Century Christian mission to southern Africa. As part of my research I am making a month-long visit to South Africa and Malawi.

My research is jointly supervised through the departments of Theology and Religious Studies, and Art History. It takes a wide variety of visual and textual, primary and secondary sources into account, as I try to piece together how visual culture affected missionaries and their work.

By undertaking a research trip, I hope to gain a better understanding of the practical uses, and ongoing legacies of missionaries' pictures.
